The Digital ID is essentially a copy of your passport, and has limited availability and use. It currently requires a U.S. passport that has not expired, and once your Digital ID is created, you can only used it in a beta test as your ID for the TSA in about 250 airports, and only for domestic travel.

If everyone seems to be talking about the upcoming Real ID deadline, you would be right. But the federal Real ID deadline is less than a month away. Beginning May 7, 2025, all U.S. travelers 18 and over must be Real ID-compliant to board domestic flights.
